Sri Lanka AI Week 2026 has officially commenced under the theme ‘AI Amplified’, with the launch of an AI Hackathon bringing together students from 27 public and private universities to demonstrate their creativity, technical skills and problem-solving abilities through artificial intelligence.
The hackathon marks the beginning of the week-long Sri Lanka AI Week 2026 initiative, pioneered by the Ministry of Digital Economy and SLT-Mobitel. The programme brings together representatives from the public and private sectors, technology companies, innovators, academia and the wider community to explore the growing impact of AI and its potential role in Sri Lanka’s digital development.
The AI Hackathon also highlights efforts to support the next generation of technology talent, providing university students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge to practical challenges while developing skills relevant to an increasingly AI-driven environment.
As part of the ongoing programme, the public will also have the opportunity to explore the AI Exhibition, scheduled to take place on September 29 and 30 at Monarch Imperial Colombo from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.
The exhibition will feature technologies from more than 35 exhibitors, including global technology companies such as Huawei, ZTE, Google and Microsoft. Visitors will be able to explore a range of AI-powered technologies and applications across different areas.
The exhibition is intended to demonstrate how artificial intelligence is moving beyond a theoretical or emerging technology concept and becoming a practical tool with applications across everyday life and major sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, banking and financial services.
Sri Lanka AI Week 2026 brings together a series of activities focused on innovation, collaboration, technology talent and the future of artificial intelligence. The initiative aims to increase public awareness of AI opportunities while contributing to the development of Sri Lanka’s emerging digital and technology ecosystem.
The week also supports the broader ambition of positioning Sri Lanka as an AI hub in the South Asian region by creating opportunities for students, businesses, technology professionals and the public to engage with developments in artificial intelligence.
