Sri Lanka’s Next Generation of AI Innovators Takes Centre Stage as International AI Challenge Gains Momentum
With over 91 teams representing more than 30 state and private universities and higher education institutions, the Aiconomy International AI Challenge 2026/27 is gaining momentum as emerging Sri Lankan talent develops artificial intelligence solutions with real-world impact.
COLOMBO, SRI LANKA – Sri Lanka’s next generation of technology innovators is demonstrating a strong commitment to artificial intelligence, as the Aiconomy International AI Challenge 2026/27 gains significant momentum among the country’s state and private universities.
The competition has already attracted over 91 registered teams representing more than 30 state and private universities and higher education institutions, reflecting growing enthusiasm among undergraduates to explore artificial intelligence beyond the classroom.
The Aiconomy International AI Challenge 2026/27, a flagship initiative organised by Aiconomy Summit, is conducted in collaboration with Wayamba University of Sri Lanka as an official university partner.
The initiative is supported at the university level by the Association of Computing & Information Systems Students (ACISS), the official student society of the Department of Computing & Information Systems, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, which plays a leading role in coordinating university participation and student engagement.
The organising committee has reported an encouraging response to the initial proposal submission process, with participating teams presenting innovative concepts that demonstrate creativity, technical understanding and the potential to address real-world challenges.
Unlike conventional academic competitions, the Aiconomy International AI Challenge seeks to bridge the gap between university education and practical innovation by encouraging students to develop AI-powered solutions with measurable social, economic and commercial value.
Participating teams are encouraged to explore applications across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, environmental sustainability, tourism, transportation, financial services, public administration, entrepreneurship and digital transformation.
Empowering University Students to Become Technology Innovators
Commenting on the growing response, Ravindu Induwara Handapangoda, Lead Organiser from Wayamba University of Sri Lanka, highlighted the importance of providing university students with opportunities to transform their ideas into meaningful technological solutions.
“The enthusiasm we have witnessed from universities across Sri Lanka is extremely encouraging. More importantly, the initial proposals demonstrate that our students are capable of identifying meaningful challenges and developing innovative ideas using artificial intelligence. Through this initiative, we want to create a platform where students can transform those ideas into practical solutions, gain industry recognition and explore opportunities beyond the university environment. We believe initiatives of this nature can play an important role in developing the next generation of Sri Lankan technology innovators and entrepreneurs.” Ravindu Induwara HandapangodaLead Organiser, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka
The competition places particular emphasis on innovation, practical AI implementation, technical feasibility, scalability and potential impact.
Following the development and evaluation stages, 20 finalist teams are scheduled to be selected, with the finalists receiving an opportunity to showcase their innovations at the Aiconomy International AI Challenge Grand Finale in February 2027.
Beyond Competition: Cash Prizes, Investor Access and International Opportunities
The Aiconomy International AI Challenge is designed to provide opportunities that extend beyond traditional competition awards.
The awards programme features significant cash prizes, including a Grand Prize of LKR 333,333, while outstanding innovations will have opportunities to explore further development and commercialisation.
The initiative also seeks to facilitate access to industry mentors, support in exploring patent protection for eligible innovations, potential investor meetings, business partnerships and connections with international technology and academic networks.
Through these opportunities, promising student innovations may gain exposure to organisations and individuals capable of supporting their continued development, including potential pathways towards startup creation and commercial applications.
Finalist teams will be invited to demonstrate their AI solutions, present their projects to an evaluation panel and engage with technology professionals, entrepreneurs, industry leaders and prospective investors.
Aiconomy Summit: Connecting Artificial Intelligence with the Future Economy
The International AI Challenge forms a key component of Aiconomy Summit Sri Lanka 2026/27, an international platform dedicated to advancing Artificial Intelligence, Financial Technology, Digital Innovation, Entrepreneurship and the Future Economy.
