SriLankan Aviation College marked the 47th anniversary of SriLankan Airlines with a special anniversary edition of its aviation talk series, The Skyline Stories, celebrating the legacy of the pioneering aviators who helped establish the national carrier and the new generation of aviation professionals continuing that journey.
The sixth episode of the series looked back at the early years of Air Lanka, which was established in 1979, and traced the national carrier’s evolution into its present identity as SriLankan Airlines. The session also explored how the values, experiences and influence of the airline’s early aviators continue to shape Sri Lanka’s aviation sector.
The anniversary edition featured Captain Shavantha Pedris and Senior First Officer Nuwan Jayawickrama, whose fathers, Captain Ranjit Pedris and Captain Nihal Jayawickrama, were among the pioneering flight crew members of Air Lanka during its formative years.
Their participation created a unique connection between two generations of Sri Lankan aviation professionals, bringing together the experiences of those who helped establish the national carrier and the pilots continuing its legacy today.
The session also highlighted the broader role SriLankan Airlines has played over the past 47 years in the development of Sri Lanka’s aviation and tourism industries. From its beginnings as Air Lanka to its evolution as the country’s national carrier, the airline’s history has remained closely connected to Sri Lanka’s growing links with international destinations and the development of the country’s tourism sector.
