LOLC Finance PLC has become the first financial institution in Sri Lanka to have its Head Office operations certified as WaterConscious, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability journey and further reinforcing its commitment to responsible water stewardship.
The WaterConscious Certification recognises organisations that adopt a structured and systematic approach to responsible water resource management. For LOLC Finance, sustainable water management is essential to reducing operational risks, improving resource efficiency, strengthening business resilience and contributing to long-term environmental sustainability. The certification marks another important milestone in LOLC Finance’s journey towards achieving water neutrality by 2040, reflecting the company’s commitment to integrating environmental responsibility into its business operations and broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) agenda.
Commenting on the achievement, Montini Warnakula, Chief Operating Officer of LOLC Finance PLC, stated, “This certification reflects the disciplined approach we have taken to integrating sustainability into our day-to-day operations. By systematically assessing our water consumption, strengthening monitoring mechanisms and implementing measures to improve resource efficiency, we are building more resilient and responsible operations. While this recognition is an important milestone, it also provides a strong foundation for driving continuous improvements in water stewardship as we progress towards our water neutrality goal by 2040 and further strengthen our overall ESG performance.”
The certification process involved a detailed water audit conducted in accordance with internationally recognised methodologies, enabling LOLC Finance to evaluate the water consumption at its Head Office premises and identify opportunities to improve efficiency. The assessment established a robust framework for monitoring water use, detecting inefficiencies and implementing corrective measures to minimise water wastage.
As part of its commitment to responsible water stewardship, LOLC Finance has implemented a range of water efficiency initiatives at its Head Office, including the adoption of water-saving technologies, continuous monitoring and auditing of water consumption, regular leak detection and the development of a circular water management system. These measures have enabled the company to identify and address inefficiencies, resulting in reduced water wastage, improved operational efficiency and measurable cost savings. Complementing these efforts, employee awareness and engagement programmes have fostered a culture of responsible water use, reinforcing the organisation’s collective commitment to sustainable resource management.
Building on this milestone, LOLC Finance plans to expand its water management initiatives across its island wide branch network through water audits and targeted conservation measures, while advancing initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and community-based water stewardship.
