Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with the introduction of iPhone Duo, its first-ever foldable iPhone. Combining a new folding design with Apple’s latest hardware and software, the device is designed to offer a larger display experience while retaining a compact form factor when closed.
When unfolded, iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner display, giving users a larger canvas for entertainment, gaming, productivity and multitasking. When folded, the device has a 5.4-inch outer display, offering 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro while maintaining a pocket-friendly design.
The two displays share the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition smoothly between them without major changes in scale or layout.
Apple CEO John Ternus described iPhone Duo as the company’s biggest transformation to the iPhone since the original model, highlighting the combination of its new hardware design and software experience.
A Foldable Design Built for Everyday Use
The iPhone Duo is designed to function as both a traditional smartphone and a larger-screen device.
Its 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display is 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the outer display provides a more compact experience when the phone is closed.
Apple has also added a nano-texture finish to the inner display to reduce glare and reflections. The finish creates a matte surface while helping minimize the visibility of the fold.
Both screens support ProMotion, Always-On display and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
Apple has also designed the inner display with a hidden FaceTime camera, allowing the screen to remain largely uninterrupted when the camera is not being used.
Later this year, iPhone Duo will also support the Apple Pencil with USB-C, allowing users to take notes, sketch and mark up documents on either display.
A Precision Hinge Designed for Durability
One of the biggest challenges with foldable smartphones is durability, and Apple has placed considerable emphasis on the hinge and internal construction of iPhone Duo.
The device is made from grade 5 titanium and features a mirror-polished finish. A 3D-printed hinge cover uses a contrasting micro-blasted finish, while Ceramic Shield protects the rear of the device.
The outer display uses Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says provides three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
The hinge itself contains more than 100 components, allowing it to control the opening and closing motion while supporting the center of the display when the phone is fully opened.
Apple has also incorporated structural support ribs and ceramic fiber inserts into the frame to improve rigidity.
The inner display uses a multilayer construction designed specifically for folding. High-strength glass, protective coatings and custom adhesives work together to allow the different layers to move smoothly during folding, helping reduce stress on the display.
The phone is also IP68-rated for splash, water and dust resistance.
Pro-Level Performance With A20 Pro
Under the hood, iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro models.
Apple says the device can deliver up to 35 percent better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, thanks in part to a new thermal management system.
A custom vapor chamber is connected directly to the chip package to help dissipate heat during demanding activities such as gaming, multitasking and AI workloads.
The A20 Pro features a six-core CPU that Apple says is up to 20 percent faster than the previous A19 Pro, alongside a seven-core GPU that is up to 40 percent faster and more power efficient.
The chip also includes a dual 16-core Neural Engine, providing twice the compute power for on-device AI models.
Dual-Battery System Targets All-Day Battery Life
Apple has equipped iPhone Duo with a battery on each side of the foldable device.
The dual-battery architecture allows Apple to make better use of the available internal space while maintaining the phone’s thin design. The batteries work together through Apple’s power management system.
The company says iPhone Duo can provide up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display and up to 44 hours using the outer display.
When both displays are used equally, Apple estimates up to 24 hours of usage per charge.
Fast charging can take the device to 50 percent in around 20 minutes, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in approximately 30 minutes with a compatible MagSafe or Qi2 charger.
A New Camera Experience Made for a Foldable iPhone
Apple has also redesigned the camera experience around the foldable form factor.
The main camera is a 48MP Fusion camera capable of capturing images at up to 48MP, while a 24MP default setting is designed to balance image quality and file size.
The camera also offers an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto option, sensor-shift optical image stabilization and improved computational photography.
A 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera adds wider perspectives and macro photography capabilities.
On the front, a new Center Stage camera can automatically capture photos and videos in different orientations, meaning users do not need to physically rotate the phone for landscape selfies.
Foldable Features Bring New Camera Possibilities
The folding design allows iPhone Duo to introduce camera features that are not available on other iPhones.
With Duo Preview, people being photographed can see the live camera preview on the outer display, allowing them to adjust their pose and framing.
Smart Take uses on-device AI to analyze a scene and automatically capture photos when subjects are ready, potentially helping users avoid missed moments.
The outer display can also be used to help children look toward the camera through Kid Cue, which uses animations from Peanuts to capture their attention.
Another feature, Duo FaceTime, allows people around the user to join a video call through the outer display and camera.
For video creators, iPhone Duo supports 4K video recording at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision using the main camera. Users can also apply Cinematic effects after recording at up to 60 frames per second.
iOS 27 Is Designed Around the Foldable Screen
iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, which has been adapted to take advantage of its two displays.
Apple has moved certain controls and navigation elements to the side of the interface to create more vertical space for content.
When the phone is opened, users can view two Home Screen pages alongside Today View, while the Dynamic Island has also been redesigned to adapt to the new display arrangement.
The operating system responds as the phone folds, unfolds and changes orientation, automatically adapting content to the display being used.
Third-party applications are also being optimized for the foldable format, with apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack already designed to take advantage of the larger screen.
Multitasking Gets a Major Upgrade
The larger inner display makes multitasking one of the major selling points of iPhone Duo.
For the first time on iPhone, users can place two apps side by side using Split View. It is also possible to open two windows from the same app, such as Safari, making tasks like comparison shopping easier.
Users can quickly switch between applications and even have a conversation with Siri AI on one side of the screen while viewing content on the other.
Pairs of applications can also be saved for quick access later.
Apple has additionally upgraded StandBy, allowing iPhone Duo to function as a photo frame, widget hub or clock when placed down, even when it is not charging.
Siri AI and Apple Intelligence
AI is another major part of Apple’s new foldable experience.
iPhone Duo introduces Siri AI, a redesigned version of Siri that is rolling out in beta with iOS 27 and is powered by Apple Intelligence.
The new Siri can use personal context to help users find information across messages, emails and photos. It can also understand what is displayed on the screen and take actions based on that information.
Users can ask Siri questions, request help with writing and interact with the assistant while continuing to use another application.
Apple Intelligence also adds new image-editing capabilities, including Spatial Reframing, Extend and an upgraded Clean Up tool.
Apple says its AI approach continues to emphasize privacy through a combination of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute.
Faster Connectivity and eSIM-Only Design
iPhone Duo uses an eSIM-only design worldwide, allowing Apple to save internal space that can instead be used for other components, including the battery.
The device is powered by Apple’s N1 wireless networking chip, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread.
It also features the company’s next-generation C2 cellular modem system, which brings improvements to cellular performance and supports mmWave in the United States.
New Accessories for the Foldable iPhone
Apple is introducing new accessories alongside iPhone Duo.
The iPhone Duo Folio comes in taupe and navy blue and features an integrated kickstand that can support multiple viewing angles for reading, watching content and FaceTime calls.
The iPhone Duo Case, available in sand and navy blue, uses a lightweight two-part design to protect both sides of the device.
Both accessories support MagSafe, Qi2 25W and Qi-certified chargers.
A More Sustainable Foldable iPhone
Apple says iPhone Duo has also been designed with its environmental goals in mind.
The device contains 35 percent recycled content overall, including 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery and 100 percent recycled titanium in the 3D-printed hinge cover.
Apple also says 60 percent renewable energy is used across the supply chain involved in manufacturing the device.
The packaging is entirely fiber-based and designed to be recyclable at home.
iPhone Duo Availability
iPhone Duo will be offered in two colors: star white and night sky.
Pre-orders begin on Friday, October 16, with availability starting Friday, October 23.
With its foldable design, dual displays, A20 Pro performance, advanced camera system and iOS 27 experience, iPhone Duo represents Apple’s biggest shift in iPhone hardware in years.
Rather than simply making a larger phone, Apple has built its first foldable around the idea of seamlessly moving between a compact smartphone and a larger productivity and entertainment device. If the experience lives up to Apple’s ambitions, iPhone Duo could mark the beginning of an entirely new chapter for the iPhone.
