Sri Lanka’s Education Challenge in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

For generations, Sri Lankans have viewed education as the most reliable path to a better life. A good education promised stable employment, upward social mobility, and financial security. Today, however, the rapid rise of artificial intelligence is forcing the country to confront a difficult question: Is the current education system preparing young people for the future, or merely for a world that no longer exists?

The issue is not simply about technology. It is about whether a system heavily focused on examinations, memorisation, and academic credentials can produce graduates capable of thriving in an economy increasingly driven by innovation, adaptability, and problem-solving.

Sri Lanka’s education model was largely designed for a different era. Success has traditionally been measured through examination results, university admissions, and the accumulation of qualifications. Families invest heavily in tuition classes, students spend years preparing for competitive exams, and policymakers continue to view educational expansion as a solution to social and economic challenges.

Yet qualifications alone do not guarantee opportunity.

While Sri Lanka has achieved impressive literacy rates and expanded access to education, economic opportunities have not always grown at the same pace. The gap between educational aspirations and available employment has contributed to graduate unemployment, youth dissatisfaction, migration, and recurring debates about job creation.

For decades, governments have attempted to ease these pressures through measures such as increasing university intake or expanding public-sector recruitment. Although these initiatives provided temporary relief, they often failed to address the deeper mismatch between education and labour market demands.

Artificial intelligence is now accelerating this challenge.

Historically, schools and universities served as the primary sources of knowledge. Information was limited, and education focused on transferring that knowledge from one generation to the next. Today, information is available instantly. With a smartphone and an internet connection, students can access vast amounts of knowledge within seconds. AI tools can summarize documents, explain complex concepts, generate code, draft reports, and assist with research at unprecedented speed.

As information becomes more accessible, the value of education is shifting.

The modern economy increasingly rewards critical thinking, creativity, adaptability, communication skills, collaboration, leadership, and the ability to learn continuously. These qualities enable individuals to work alongside technology rather than compete against it.

However, many aspects of Sri Lanka’s education system continue to prioritize memorisation and examination performance. Students are often rewarded for reproducing information rather than questioning it, applying it, or using it to solve real-world problems.

This creates a growing disconnect between educational success and workplace readiness.

The country’s thriving tuition industry highlights this challenge. Despite the popularity of free education, countless families spend significant amounts on private classes. In many cases, success in examinations depends as much on access to tuition as on classroom learning.

As a result, education has become increasingly exam-centred. Rather than encouraging curiosity, innovation, and independent thinking, the system often emphasizes performance in a limited number of high-stakes assessments.

At the same time, wealthier families are increasingly seeking educational opportunities abroad, while others remain dependent on local institutions. This creates disparities in access to globally competitive learning experiences and further widens existing inequalities.

Higher education faces a similar dilemma. Public universities play an essential role in national development, but debates frequently focus on admissions rather than outcomes. Questions about graduate employability, entrepreneurship, research quality, innovation, and industry relevance often receive less attention than discussions about entry requirements.

In an AI-driven world, outcomes matter more than ever.

Universities should not be judged solely by how many students they admit but by how effectively they prepare graduates to succeed in a changing economy. Stronger links with industry, investment in research, international collaboration, and exposure to emerging technologies will become increasingly important.

Expanding educational opportunities should also involve encouraging diverse models of higher education, including private institutions, international partnerships, specialized research centres, and innovation hubs. The goal should not be to replace public education but to create a broader ecosystem that supports talent development and lifelong learning.

Beyond institutional reform, Sri Lanka must also rethink its broader attitudes toward employment. A university degree should be viewed as preparation for opportunity, not a guarantee of a job. Employability depends on skills, adaptability, and the ability to create value in a competitive marketplace.

This distinction is becoming increasingly significant as automation transforms many traditional professions. Routine administrative tasks, basic reporting, data processing, and other repetitive white-collar functions are becoming easier to automate. Workers who rely solely on technical knowledge may find themselves competing directly with increasingly capable AI systems.

Those who combine knowledge with creativity, judgment, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving abilities will be far better positioned to succeed.

The future of education is not about competing with artificial intelligence. It is about developing the uniquely human capabilities that technology cannot easily replicate.

For Sri Lanka, the challenge is not whether education remains important. It is whether the country can modernize its approach quickly enough to prepare future generations for a rapidly evolving world.

The decisions made today will shape not only the prospects of individual students but also the country’s ability to compete, innovate, and prosper in the decades ahead.
