Hayleys Solar Connects 5MW Kosgama Solar Project to National Grid

Adding 9.9 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, the project further advances Sri Lanka’s renewable energy ambitions.

Hayleys Solar, the solar energy arm of Hayleys Fentons Limited, has officially connected two ground-mounted solar power projects in Kosgama to the national electricity grid, adding a combined capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) to Sri Lanka’s renewable energy infrastructure.

Comprising Kosgama I, with a capacity of 2MW, and Kosgama II, with a capacity of 3MW, the projects represent the second phase of Hayleys Solar’s planned 300MW ground-mounted solar portfolio, which began with the Veyangoda project.

Equipped with 10,790 high-efficiency 640-watt solar panels, the two facilities are expected to generate approximately 9.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to 9.9 gigawatt-hours. Their output is also expected to prevent the release of approximately 6,930 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, contributing to the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and expand clean energy generation.

The projects presented significant engineering and construction challenges due to the natural characteristics of the site. Certain areas were difficult to access using conventional machinery, requiring specialised installation methods and substantial manual work, including excavation and foundation preparation.

Through site-specific engineering solutions, Hayleys Solar successfully completed the projects while preserving the natural terrain and existing drainage pathways. The approach also helped minimise the environmental impact of construction, demonstrating the company’s ability to adapt renewable energy development to challenging site conditions.

As Sri Lanka progresses towards its target of generating 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030, Hayleys Solar’s planned 300MW project portfolio is expected to contribute additional large-scale capacity to the national grid. The company’s efforts also align with the wider Hayleys Group’s sustainability commitments, with approximately 70% of the Group’s operational energy requirements already being met through renewable energy sources.

Commenting on the achievement, Hasith Premathilake, Managing Director of Hayleys Fentons Limited, said:

“The Kosgama project has clearly demonstrated the ability of our Hayleys Solar team to overcome challenging conditions and transform them into successful development opportunities. Our commitment goes beyond renewable energy generation. Through our ‘Hive for the Future’ programme, we are also working to protect local biodiversity and improve the livelihoods of surrounding communities. By promoting beekeeping and protecting pollinators, we are pleased to deliver a green energy project that creates meaningful value for both the environment and society.”

Roshen Perera, Deputy Managing Director of the Energy Sector at Hayleys Fentons Limited, added:

“Unlike a conventional ground-mounted solar project, Kosgama required us to adopt engineering solutions specifically suited to the site. From foundation preparation to installation methods, every aspect was carried out in a way that protected the natural environment and existing water pathways. Our teams successfully overcame these technical challenges.”

The Kosgama projects further demonstrate Hayleys Solar’s engineering capabilities and commitment to advancing sustainable renewable energy development across Sri Lanka. By combining clean energy generation with site-sensitive construction practices and community-focused environmental initiatives, the company continues to contribute to the country’s evolving energy landscape.
