Hilton Colombo marks its 39th anniversary this September, celebrating nearly four decades as one of Sri Lanka’s pioneering international hotels and the flagship Hilton property in the country.
Since opening its doors in 1987, the hotel has grown alongside Colombo, becoming an established part of the city’s story and a gathering place for international travellers, local guests, world leaders, families and generations of team members.
Over the years, Hilton Colombo has hosted numerous occasions that have become part of the hotel’s history as well as Colombo’s wider story. The property has welcomed Commonwealth Heads of State, former US presidents and visiting dignitaries, while its event spaces have hosted major occasions including CHOGM 2013, Colombo Fashion Week, official state banquets and national celebrations.
The hotel has also been part of countless family milestones, with more than 20,000 weddings celebrated at the property over the years. These celebrations have made Hilton Colombo a familiar part of family stories that have continued across generations.
Its role in the city, however, extends beyond accommodation. With 368 guestrooms and suites, six restaurants and bars, and 2,891 square metres of meetings and events space, Hilton Colombo has established itself as a destination for business, celebrations, dining and leisure.
The hotel’s pillar-less Grand Ballroom has hosted some of Colombo’s most significant corporate and social gatherings, while venues such as The Blue and Ruby offer distinctive settings for both large-scale celebrations and more intimate occasions.
Hilton Colombo has also played a notable role in the city’s dining and social scene. Graze Kitchen offers international and local cuisine through its signature show kitchens, while Emperor’s Wok showcases the heritage of Chinese fine dining.
L.A.B. has become known for relaxed afternoons overlooking the Lotus Pond and lively jazz evenings, while Café Kai has built a following for its handcrafted cakes and pastries. SunsetBlu offers poolside dining and after-dark entertainment, while Stella Karaoke Lounge & Bar provides an evening centred around music and good company.
Another long-standing tradition is Oktoberfest at Hilton Colombo, which has been part of the hotel’s calendar for more than three decades. The annual celebration remains one of the property’s most recognised events and will take place this year from October 29 to November 7.
Reflecting on the milestone, Hilton Sri Lanka Area General Manager and Hilton Colombo General Manager Manesh Fernando said, “Hilton Colombo has had the privilege of growing alongside this city and being part of many of its defining moments.”
As the property enters its 40th year, the 39th anniversary marks not only its longevity but also the generations of guests, colleagues and communities who have contributed to its place in Colombo’s hospitality landscape.
