“I am happy with where I am in life, and I am sincerely grateful to Almighty Allah for all that I have. Alhamdulillah.”

Success is often defined by titles, achievements, and financial milestones. Yet the most meaningful success stories are those that reveal something deeper — stories that teach us about resilience, character, faith, and the choices that shape a fulfilling life. The journey of Abdus Sameeul Aleem is one such story.
It is a story that begins with a mischievous young boy growing up in a large family, develops through the discipline of sport, matures through the challenges of the corporate world, and ultimately becomes a powerful example of leadership grounded in humility and gratitude.
Growing up with strong foundations

Aleem grew up as the youngest of nine siblings, shaped early by the example of an admired elder brother.
Aleem grew up as the youngest member of a family blessed with five sisters and three brothers. As the youngest child, he was surrounded by love, guidance, and occasional discipline from his elder siblings. Looking back, he describes himself as an energetic and mischievous child who was constantly exploring, learning, and testing boundaries.
One of the strongest influences during his childhood was his elder brother — respected by teachers, admired by fellow students, and well known in both school and tuition circles. For years, Aleem was often introduced simply as “his younger brother.” Rather than feeling overshadowed, he felt inspired. Watching someone close earn admiration through hard work and good character taught him an important lesson at a young age: respect is not given automatically. It is earned through actions.
The playing field that shaped a future leader

Aleem represented Sri Lanka in the National Under-20 Rugby Team, captaining both the Rugby and Athletics teams at school.
Before entering the corporate world, Aleem’s first passion was sport. He represented his school in Rugby, Football, and Athletics, earning colours in all three disciplines. His leadership abilities became evident early on as he captained both the Rugby and Athletics teams and went on to represent Sri Lanka in the National Under-20 Rugby Team.
Sport taught him lessons that would prove invaluable throughout his life — discipline, commitment, teamwork, and resilience. The ability to remain focused under pressure. The determination to keep moving forward after setbacks. Every victory taught confidence. Every defeat taught humility. Every challenge taught perseverance. Those lessons would later become the foundation of his professional success.
Discovering his true strength
Like many talented athletes, Aleem initially envisioned a future closely connected to sport. He joined John Keells with the intention of continuing his rugby journey, attracted by the company’s strong reputation within the corporate rugby arena. However, life has a remarkable way of revealing opportunities we never expect.
As he gained exposure to the corporate environment, he began to discover another strength within himself — a natural ability to connect with people. He enjoyed communicating. He understood relationships. He found satisfaction in helping customers solve problems and achieve their goals. In 2003, he entered the field of Sales and Marketing as a Marketing Officer at JKOA. It proved to be a turning point.
Excellence through consistency

Recognised as Best Salesperson for four consecutive years, Aleem’s performance earned him Employee of the Year in 2006.
Success is rarely the result of a single breakthrough. More often, it is the product of small actions repeated consistently over time. From the beginning of his sales career, Aleem demonstrated an exceptional commitment to excellence. His ability to build relationships, understand customer needs, and consistently deliver results quickly distinguished him from his peers.
He was recognised as Best Salesperson for four consecutive years from 2003 to 2006. Such an achievement reflects more than talent — it reflects discipline, commitment, and a mindset focused on continuous improvement. His outstanding performance earned him a promotion to Assistant Manager and ultimately the prestigious Employee of the Year award in 2006.
The defining test of character
Every successful journey includes moments that test not only professional ability but personal character. One of the most challenging periods of Aleem’s career came when a customer who had purchased a large number of laptops suddenly disappeared, leaving behind a substantial outstanding amount that represented significant financial exposure to the business.
Determined to do what was right, Aleem sought the assistance of law enforcement authorities and pursued every available avenue to resolve the matter. Although action was eventually taken, much of the loss could not be recovered. His incentives were withheld for a considerable period, creating significant financial pressure at a time when he was also building a home for his family.
Many people facing such circumstances would have become discouraged. Others might have compromised their principles. Aleem chose a different path. He remained committed to integrity, trusting that honesty and doing the right thing would eventually bring their own reward. Then, through the grace of Almighty Allah, financial support came at the right moment, easing the burden and strengthening his faith.
Today, when Aleem reflects on that experience, he does not remember it as a story of loss. He remembers it as a lesson in patience, perseverance, and faith — a reminder that integrity is never wasted, and that character is one of life’s greatest assets.
The power of family

Aleem credits his wife Hafsa Lareef as an unwavering source of strength throughout every chapter of his journey.
Behind every achievement stands a support system. For Aleem, that support has always come from his family. He speaks with immense gratitude about his wife, Hafsa Lareef, whose unwavering support has helped him navigate both triumphs and challenges throughout his journey.
Together, they have built a loving family and raised two sons, Abdul Haadhi and Haaziq, who remain the centre of their lives. Despite the demands of a senior corporate role, Aleem firmly believes that family must always remain a priority. Success at work means little if it comes at the expense of the people who matter most.
Building leaders, not followers
One of Aleem’s greatest strengths lies in his ability to develop people. He strongly believes that leadership is not about creating dependence — it is about empowering others to become leaders themselves. Throughout his career, he has dedicated significant time and effort to mentoring young professionals, helping them discover their strengths, build confidence, and reach their potential.
He invests in creating capable second- and third-line leaders who share the organisation’s values, vision, and commitment to excellence. For Aleem, one of the most rewarding aspects of leadership is witnessing the success of those he has mentored. Their achievements become part of his own legacy.
Leading through change

Today, as Vice President of Metropolitan Technologies, Aleem continues to lead Strategic Sales and Marketing in a rapidly evolving business landscape. Sri Lanka’s dynamic market environment presents both challenges and opportunities — success requires agility, foresight, and the ability to understand changing customer behaviours and emerging market trends.
Yet despite the scale of his responsibilities, his focus remains remarkably simple: create value, develop people, and leave every organisation stronger than he found it.
A vision rooted in purpose
When discussing his future aspirations, Aleem’s response is refreshingly different from what many might expect. He does not speak of greater titles or personal wealth. Instead, he speaks about living a meaningful life with his family, seeing his children succeed, and sharing life’s journey with the people he loves.
At the same time, he carries a vision that reflects his passion for helping others. One day, he hopes to establish a training institute dedicated to developing young individuals who aspire to excel in the corporate world — passing on the lessons, skills, and mindset that shaped his own journey.
Lessons for the next generation

“Enjoy every moment and take pleasure in what you do.” — a lesson Aleem wishes he had learned earlier.
When asked what advice he would offer young people, Aleem encourages individuals to spend time understanding themselves. Know your strengths. Acknowledge your weaknesses. Identify your natural abilities and align them with your aspirations. When talent and purpose come together, success becomes far more meaningful and sustainable.
He also shares one lesson he wishes someone had taught him earlier in life: enjoy every moment and take pleasure in what you do. In a world where people are constantly chasing the next goal, many forget to appreciate the journey itself. Aleem’s life reminds us that happiness is not waiting somewhere in the future — it is found in the choices we make every day.
A life guided by gratitude
If there is one theme that runs through every chapter of Aleem’s story, it is gratitude. Despite the achievements, responsibilities, and leadership positions, he remains deeply grounded — grateful for his family, grateful for the opportunities he received, grateful for the challenges that strengthened him, and above all, grateful to Almighty Allah for every blessing throughout his journey.
Perhaps that is why his story resonates so strongly. It is not simply a story about professional success. It is a story about building a meaningful life — a life guided by integrity, strengthened by faith, enriched by family, dedicated to helping others grow, and lived with gratitude.
“I am happy with where I am in life, and I am sincerely grateful to Almighty Allah for all that I have. Alhamdulillah.”
In many ways, those words may be the most powerful measure of success anyone could hope to achieve.
