The Training Lab Pvt. Ltd announced the launch of ReturnShip Alliance, Sri Lanka’s first holistic ReturnShip ecosystem, built to reconnect skilled professionals who have stepped away from mainstream employment with meaningful, flexible work – while giving Sri Lanka’s micro- and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) access to affordable, high-quality back-office support.
ReturnShip Alliance is built around a simple but powerful idea: talent doesn’t disappear when someone takes a career break. Carers, retired professionals, confident differently-abled individuals, and others who have faced barriers to conventional employment often carry deep expertise that goes unused simply because the traditional workplace wasn’t built to accommodate their circumstances. ReturnShip Alliance is designed to change that.
At the heart of the model are Pods: small, accountable teams of four to five professionals who work together to deliver outsourced and fractional back-office services, such as finance, administration, and operational support, to client businesses. Each pod is guided by a pod lead, who manages the client relationship and ensures consistent, professional delivery. This structure allows individuals to re-enter the workforce on flexible terms, without sacrificing the accountability and quality that businesses need.
Professionals joining a pod go through structured training and career facilitation designed to rebuild confidence and sharpen skills before they re-enter client-facing work. At the same time, employer partners receive their training and onboarding support, helping businesses understand how to work effectively with Pods and get the most value from the model: turning ReturnShip Alliance into a genuine two-way partnership rather than a simple staffing arrangement.
Crucially, the ReturnShip Alliance talent model imposes no barriers based on age, gender, or geographic location and is designed to include differently abled professionals as well. Professionals from anywhere in Sri Lanka can join a pod, opening opportunities for talented individuals regardless of where they live or what stage of life they are in.
“ReturnShip Alliance was born from a simple observation, that Sri Lanka is full of skilled professionals who’ve had to step back from their careers, not because they lack ability, but because the system never offered them a flexible way back in,” said Shivalatha Sivasundaram, founder/CEO of The Training Lab Pvt. Ltd. “The Pod model gives people a real, structured path to restart their professional journeys – on their terms – and I’m grateful to be building it alongside a team that believes in that same vision,” said Shivalatha Sivasundaram, founder/CEO of The Training Lab Pvt Ltd.
“From a technology and operations standpoint, our focus has been on building a stack that lets Pods function seamlessly so professionals can concentrate on delivering great work for clients rather than wrestling with tools,” said Shiraz Safaideen, an independent consultant who leads the technology stack and broader operational support behind ReturnShip Alliance. “We’ve designed the backend to scale with the model, from the first cohort in Sri Lanka right through to the franchise-style expansion planned ahead.”
For SMEs and micro-businesses, ReturnShip Alliance offers a cost-effective alternative to hiring full-time back-office staff, with the reliability of a structured team rather than a single freelancer.
The launch marks the first phase of a broader roadmap. The Training Lab Pvt Ltd plans to prove the model in Sri Lanka before expanding internationally, with a long-term vision of scaling through a franchise-style licensing model that brings the ReturnShip Alliance approach to new markets around the world.
