NIBM Neo Ventures hosts UK trade delegation to strengthen innovation partnerships

NIBM Neo Ventures recently welcomed a delegation from the United Kingdom for a high-level engagement aimed at strengthening innovation, entrepreneurship, and academic collaboration between Sri Lanka and the UK. The visit marked another significant milestone in NIBM’s efforts to build globally connected innovation ecosystems while preparing students to become future-ready entrepreneurs and business leaders.

The delegation was led by Lord John Hannett of Everton, UK Trade Envoy to Sri Lanka, and included British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Andrew Patrick, Deputy Trade Commissioner for South Asia Jaya Choraria and Head of Trade and Investment at the British High Commission Colombo Asanthi Fernando. Their visit reflected the United Kingdom’s continued commitment to fostering stronger partnerships with Sri Lanka in the fields of higher education, innovation, enterprise, and economic development.

The delegation met NIBM Director General Dr. D. M. A. Kulasooriya, together with senior academic leaders, representatives from NIBM Neo Ventures, industry stakeholders, and a vibrant community of student innovators. The engagement provided an opportunity to exchange ideas on the evolving role of higher education in driving entrepreneurship, commercialising innovation, and creating meaningful economic impact.

Discussions centred on the importance of strengthening collaboration between academia, industry, Government, and international partners to build sustainable innovation ecosystems.

Participants explored how institutions can work together to equip young people with the skills, knowledge, and entrepreneurial mindset required to thrive in an increasingly competitive global economy. The dialogue also highlighted the value of international partnerships in creating opportunities for research, innovation, business development, and knowledge exchange.

A key highlight of the visit was an engaging student startup pitch showcase organised by NIBM Neo Ventures. Student entrepreneurs presented a range of innovative business ideas and technology-driven solutions developed to address contemporary challenges across various sectors.

The presentations reflected not only creativity and technical capability but also the confidence, resilience, and entrepreneurial thinking that NIBM seeks to cultivate among its students.

The visiting delegation interacted closely with the student founders, offering encouragement, constructive feedback, and valuable insights drawn from international experience. Their engagement showcased the importance of providing aspiring entrepreneurs with platforms to showcase their ideas while connecting them with industry experts, investors, and global networks that can help transform promising concepts into successful ventures.

NIBM Neo Ventures continues to serve as a catalyst for innovation within the institution by nurturing entrepreneurial talent through mentorship, incubation, industry partnerships, and experiential learning.

By creating an environment where innovative ideas can be developed into viable businesses, the centre plays an important role in supporting Sri Lanka’s growing startup ecosystem while inspiring students to pursue entrepreneurship as a pathway to economic and social impact.

The visit also highlighted NIBM’s commitment to internationalisation through its long-standing collaborations with Coventry University and the University of Essex.

These partnerships provide students with access to globally recognised academic programmes, international perspectives, and opportunities to develop the competencies required in today’s interconnected world.

By integrating global best practices with industry-focused education, NIBM continues to prepare graduates who are capable of leading innovation locally and internationally.

Representatives from both Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom acknowledged the growing importance of educational collaboration in strengthening bilateral relations and supporting sustainable economic growth.

They emphasised that innovation flourishes when institutions transcend geographical boundaries and work together to share knowledge, expertise, and opportunities.

As Sri Lanka continues to strengthen its innovation landscape, initiatives such as this play an increasingly important role in empowering young innovators to think globally while solving local and international challenges.

The visit concluded with a shared commitment to exploring future avenues of collaboration that will further enhance educational excellence, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom.

It also reaffirmed NIBM’s vision of transforming education into impact by equipping students with the skills, confidence, and global outlook needed to become innovators, changemakers, and leaders in an increasingly dynamic world.
