MO Marketplace brings AI to Sri Lankan commerce

MO Marketplace, launched in June 2024 by founder and CEO Anika Wijesuriya, is steadily reshaping Sri Lanka’s digital buying and selling landscape. Positioned as the country’s first dedicated mobile marketplace platform, the app has rapidly gained momentum, signalling a shift in how Sri Lankans engage in everyday commerce.

Available on both Google Play and the App Store, MO Marketplace has surpassed 45,000 downloads and attracted over 12,000 registered users within its first year of operation. In a market where buying and selling have long relied on Facebook groups, WhatsApp messages, and informal networks, the platform introduces a more organised and structured alternative.

Its growth comes at a significant moment in Sri Lanka’s digital evolution. With smartphone usage continuing to expand and digital habits becoming increasingly mainstream, more consumers and businesses are turning toward convenient online solutions. Confidence in digital transactions, once limited to younger and more tech-savvy users, is steadily broadening across different segments of society.

For small and medium-sized enterprises, affordability remains a crucial factor. Many sellers on larger online platforms often face commission rates ranging between 15 percent and 30 percent. MO Marketplace offers a more competitive approach, maintaining a maximum commission rate of 10 percent, providing smaller businesses with greater opportunities to retain profits while expanding their reach.

The platform also streamlines both delivery and payment processes, creating a safer and more reliable experience for buyers and sellers alike. By managing transactions from start to finish, MO Marketplace places strong emphasis on trust, an increasingly valuable component in today’s digital marketplace.

Looking ahead, the platform plans to introduce AI powered listing tools and automated image enhancement features in July, further strengthening its technology offering and improving the user experience for local sellers.

Buying and selling through social media, messaging platforms, and personal networks has long been part of Sri Lankan consumer culture. MO Marketplace builds upon these familiar habits while providing the digital infrastructure to support them more efficiently, offering a modern solution tailored to the needs of today’s connected marketplace.
