Binance Promotes Blockchain Education in Colombo Through Bitcoin Pizza Day Event
Global blockchain ecosystem and digital asset platform Binance recently celebrated Bitcoin Pizza Day in Sri Lanka with an educational initiative at One Galle Face Mall, Colombo, attracting more than 2,000 visitors interested in learning about blockchain technology and digital assets.
Held across 21 and 22 May, the event introduced participants to the fundamentals of Web3 through engaging and beginner-friendly activities. The initiative aimed to simplify often misunderstood digital concepts while responding to the growing curiosity surrounding blockchain innovation and cryptocurrency adoption in Sri Lanka.
A significant number of attendees experienced a digital asset learning event for the first time, reflecting increasing public interest in understanding emerging financial technologies.
Speaking on the importance of awareness and responsible participation, S.B. Seker, Head of APAC at Binance, emphasized that knowledge should come before widespread adoption.
He noted that many South Asian markets are witnessing rising enthusiasm for blockchain, yet reliable and accessible education remains limited. According to him, Binance’s focus is on helping communities better understand digital assets by providing practical and trustworthy information.
Visitors at the Colombo activation participated in educational quizzes, hands-on learning stations, and guided activities designed for varying levels of familiarity with blockchain. Topics ranged from the basics of decentralized systems to identifying online scams and understanding digital risk management. A large percentage of participants completed the full learning experience, spending approximately 15 minutes exploring the educational content.
Seker also reflected on the meaning behind Bitcoin Pizza Day, describing it as a milestone that represents innovation and experimentation. He referred to the well-known 2010 transaction in which programmer Laszlo Hanyecz used Bitcoin to purchase pizza, a moment widely recognised as one of the first real-world uses of cryptocurrency.
He explained that what once seemed experimental has evolved into practical financial use cases, with digital assets increasingly being explored for payments, savings, and broader financial opportunities. Bitcoin Pizza Day, he said, serves as a reminder of how blockchain technology has progressed from concept to real-world application.
Beyond this event, Binance has continued expanding its educational outreach throughout South Asia. Through Binance Academy and regional initiatives, the company has focused on improving digital literacy related to blockchain and Web3 technologies.
In Sri Lanka, the Colombo activation forms part of a broader educational effort that includes ChainCeylon 2026, a university-focused program launched earlier this year. The initiative has already engaged students from several higher education institutions, including the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Kelaniya, Wayamba University, and the University of Moratuwa, offering workshops on blockchain applications, on-chain analysis, and digital asset fundamentals.
