Negombo will take centre stage as a sports tourism destination when the Maris Motor Rally 2026, popularly known as MMR 26, returns on August 1 with a combination of competitive motorsport, international entertainment and destination-based visitor experiences according to the organisers.
Organised by the Old Boys’ Association of Maris Stella College, Negombo, the event will be centred on the MMR 26 Time-Speed-Distance Rally, which will flag off from the Maris Stella College premises at 8.00 am.
Unlike speed racing events, the Maris Motor Rally like all rally events will test the ability of drivers and navigators to maintain specified speeds, follow the designated route and complete each section within the required time.
According to organisers the Rally is expected to attract competitors, motorsport enthusiasts, families and spectators with approximately 2000 people anticipated by the time the first car is flagged off.
Nishendra Ekanayake the chairman of the MMR 26 Rally said as many as 70 competitors are listed to hit the start and the winner with the least number of blemishes on the secretive course will be presented with the Ranjith Fernando Memorial Challenge Shield adding further sporting significance this year.
St. Joseph’s Hospital in Negombo is the title sponsor of MMR 26 and presented their sponsorship at a media launch last Saturday at the Jetwing Hotel at Union Place in Colombo.
Dhammika Fernando, the president of the Maris Stella Old Boys’ Association said the region’s historic locations and beach and the ensuing entertainment celebrations that will include a stage performance by a ‘duplicate’ of the world famous pop band ABBA will make Negombo a true destination for both local and foreign tourists.
He said emphasis will also be directed towards a cleaner Negombo in keeping with the government’s project of Clean Sri Lanka.
The musical show will be for ticket holders priced at Rs.6000 each and the organisers say they expect an audience of approximately 8000.
“While motorsport remains at the heart of MMR 26, we are seeking to use the event to encourage spectators and visitors to spend an extended period in Negombo rather than attend only the rally”, said Dhammika Fernando.
He said a One Pass visitor scheme will be introduced through the QR code included on event tickets that will provide access to special offers and discounts from participating hotels, restaurants and selected tourism-related establishments in Negombo.
“MMR 26 is not only a rally or a music festival. It is a platform to promote Negombo as a complete weekend economy covering hotels, restaurants, entertainment, transport, small businesses and community initiatives,” Fernando said.
He said they hope to establish the Rally as a regular fixture in Sri Lanka’s sporting and tourism calendars, meaning the event is expected to foster tourism income beyond conventional hotel accommodation by generating business for restaurants, transport operators, event suppliers, vendors and entertainment providers.
Fernando said the entire project has the blessings of the Negombo Municipal Council.
“Negombo has the natural advantage of being close to the airport, having a strong hotel base, a rich cultural identity and a vibrant coastal economy,” Fernando said.
